Perimenopause, Menopause & Your Skin
Tanya's Personal Picks
If you're going through perimenopause or menopause and you've looked in the mirror and thought, "What has happened to my skin?", I completely understand.
My journey in skincare started around 20 years ago, when I was a young mum treating everyone from teenage girls through to women in their 60s and 70s. Over the years, my client base has grown with me. I've watched their skin change through different stages of life, while at the same time watching my own skin change too. Now at 49, perimenopause and menopause aren't simply things I understand professionally, they are changes I'm experiencing and learning from personally as well.
One thing those 20 years have taught me is that our skin is like our fingerprints, no two skins are exactly the same.
As our hormones change, we can experience more dryness, dehydration, sensitivity, fine lines and loss of firmness and elasticity. Products we've happily used for years can suddenly feel like they're no longer enough.
But every woman experiences these changes differently.
One woman may become extremely dry, another sensitive, while someone else's main concern might be firmness, pigmentation or simply skin that suddenly looks tired.
That's why at Crystal Clear Skin Management, we always start with the skin in front of us.
What does your skin actually need?
For Dryness & Dehydration
When my skin needs something richer, Cosmedix Emulsion is my go-to. Reboot followed by Emulsion is a beautiful evening combination when skin is experiencing both dehydration and dryness.
For Loss of Firmness & Plumpness
For loss of firmness and plumpness, I love Société Intense Firming Complex. If dehydration is also an issue, Société Skin Hydration Complex can complement it beautifully.
For Long-Term Age Management
Youth EssentiA - Vita-Peptide C-Quence Serum 1
For women wanting a progressive, long-term approach to age management, Environ Youth EssentiA C-Quence remains one of my favourites. I particularly like Environ's step-up approach to vitamin A rather than assuming stronger is automatically better.
Environ Picks
Focus Care Moisture+ Vita-Complex Super Moisturiser
If you're already using Environ but suddenly find your skin needs more moisture, Environ Super Moisturiser can be an excellent addition.
Focus Care Youth+ Serience Night Serum
For stressed or tired-looking skin, I love Environ Seriénce Night Serum.
Focus Care Moisture+ Vita-Antioxidant Hydrating Oil Capsules
The Environ Hydrating Oil Capsules are gorgeous when my skin needs that extra bit of nourishment and glow.
Aspect Picks
Aspect Extreme B 17 is another excellent all-rounder for hydration, barrier support and overall skin condition.
PHYTO-DEFENCE SUPER ANTIOXIDANT SERUM
And if your skin has suddenly become sensitive or reactive, that's when I'd consider Aspect Phyto-Defence Serum or a personalised Dermaviduals prescription.
SPF
SIMKA Sheer Mineral Milk SPF 50
Regardless of your routine, don't forget SPF 50. I love the SIMKA SPF 50 range, so shop the Mineral Milk or any of the other available SPF 50 products.
Tanya's Perimenopause & Menopause Skin Edit
A Final Word From Me
After 20 years working with skin, one thing I'm absolutely certain of is that skin is like a fingerprint, no two are the same.
Please don't feel that reaching perimenopause or menopause means you suddenly need to replace everything in your bathroom cabinet or buy the strongest anti-ageing products available.
Listen to your skin.
If it's dry, let's nourish it. If it's dehydrated, let's hydrate it. If firmness is concerning you, let's address that. And if your skin has become sensitive, let's support and strengthen the barrier before introducing more actives.
You don't need every product I've mentioned either. A good cleanser, one treatment targeting your main concern, an appropriate moisturiser and SPF 50 can be a fantastic starting point.
And you don't have to be able to visit us in person.
We're always happy to consult with you over the phone, by email, FaceTime or Zoom and help work through what's happening with your skin and your current routine.
If you already have a therapist you trust, I'm also very happy to work with what your current therapist has recommended rather than trying to replace their advice. Good skincare isn't about insisting there's only one way of doing things.
Just as no two skins are the same, no two approaches to looking after them need to be exactly the same either.
I've shared these products because they're products I genuinely love and recommend. But ultimately, your skin gets the final say.
Tanya xx
